Welfare Texas – Nature Trail

The Old Spanish Goat Nature Trail in Welfare, Texas gives you a snapshot of all the flora and animal life in Kendall County in the Texas Hill Country.

The Texas Hill Country  at an elevation of between 1,000 to 2,500 feet, with Welfare at 1446 feet, is a region of rugged natural beauty. The landscape is rocky, with limestone hills and ravines carved by spring fed steams.  Although the climate is considered semi- arid at 30 inches of rain per year, the region can produce 20 inches of rain in a twenty four period or severe drought with only 5 inches in a year. These possible contrasts produce a complex native plant and animal community, which defines the uniqueness of the area.

There is large variety of native plant life and animal life.  A bird-watching  blind is set up for  photographs or just viewing.  A list of plants is available at the office – see how many you can identify.

The Old Spanish Goat Trail in Welfare affords many opportunities for the nature lover. Bring your camera or plan to just sit for a spell.
